The elder law exams of the National Elder Law Foundation (NELF), a national, ABA-accredited specialty certification board, are used by the North Carolina State Bar specialization program to qualify lawyers for certification in elder law. A lawyer who passes the NELF exam is eligible for certification by both the North Carolina Board of Legal Specialization and by the National Elder Law Foundation. Exam and study guide information are available from NELF.

The National Elder Law Foundation (NELF) does not provide exam preparation materials. The scope of the exam is broader than most practices and you must design your studying on the areas with which you are not familiar. NELF does suggests the following publications: Representing the Elderly Client by Thomas D. Begley Jr. and Jo-Anne Herina Jeffreys, Elder Law in a Nutshell and Advising the Elderly or Disabled Client by Lawrence Frolik, and Tax, Estate and Financial Planning for the Elderly by Rebecca Morgan and David English, and the Elder Law Answer book by Robert Fleming and Lisa Davis.
